HOMER Reading
The Learn-to-Read program powered by your child’s passions
In my first months as Director of Product, I prioritized usability of the HOMER Reading product, focusing on making the interface easier and more intuitive for young users. Collaborating closely with HOMER’s Director of User Experience, we overhauled the initial app experience for users, making the path to content easier for both parents and kids.
These changes included automatic login across the portfolio of apps; redesigned main menu to remove friction for kids to access game content; and a redesigned pathway to streamline and focus kids on their learning curriculum.
In my first year at HOMER, all long- and short-term engagement metrics improved by between 22% and 43%.
The redesigned main menu, designed to separate the kid and parent experience, and kid-tested to optimize for getting kids into the play experience as quickly as possible.
The redesigned learning pathway experience, where kids can step-by-step achieve literacy. This was streamlined and distraction was removed so that the content thumbnails are the most enticing item on the screen. Scrolling was limited and access to content was clarified so that kids knew exactly what was available to play and what wasn’t.
The redesigned discovery and browsing experience. This limited scrolling to only one direction, which aligned with how kids browse through content. This redesign also removed cognitive load, by putting all potential lessons in one interface, rather than requiring a kid to remember how or where they found a piece of content previously.
