Virtual Service Pilot Program Participant - Literacy Teacher

US Peace Corps - Vanuatu

2023

For the Fall semester of 2023, I took to my computer for an hour twice a week to teach a group of 4th graders to read better and more confidently. I partnered with a school in Vanuatu (in the Pacific Islands) through this innovative program devised by the Peace Corps to allow volunteers to continue their important global work, even in the midst of COVID.

Teacher Trainer & Literacy Volunteer

US Peace Corps - The Gambia

2010-2012

As a Peace Corps Volunteer, I lived in a rural West African village.  I worked in a village elementary school, where I taught literacy skills to students and pedagogical skills to teacher.

I also organized and competed in the West African International Softball Tournament, which we proudly won in 2011.

Big Idea Week Volunteer

2016

As an employee in the tech industry, I volunteered to present my professional experiences and mentor a class of fourth graders as they went through the design process.  Small groups of kids were asked to determine a problem, find a solution, and prototype a product, all within a week.

My favorite was a pair of snap on shoes that made it so you could have one pair of shoes for all occasions - the Oscars, a soccer game, rollerblading, ice skating.  Brilliant.

For two weeks during the summer of 2016, I volunteered for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics as a tennis statistician.  I kept tally of statistics for professional tennis players, including gold medal winners Andy Murray and Serena and Venus Williams.

To this day, I still have not played a full tennis match.
